Drain cleaning that finds the cause

Clearing a clog is the easy part. The question that matters is why it formed, because a line that is cleared without an answer usually clogs again. If you tried chemical drain cleaning first and it did not work, tell the plumber before we start. Those products sit in the pipe, they are hard on older metal drains, and they make the line unsafe to open until it is flushed. Regular drain cleaning with the right tool will help an old pipe more than another bottle ever will, and it is the best way to prevent the next backup.

When to call about a main line clog

One slow bathroom drain is usually a local problem, often hair and soap in the trap. A problem in the main sewer line looks different, and it is worth knowing the difference before you call:

• More than one fixture is slow or clogged at the same time, especially on the lowest floor.
• The toilet gurgles or the tub drain bubbles when the washing machine empties.
• Water comes up in the shower when you flush a toilet.
• Clogs come back within weeks of being cleared.
• A sewer odor that does not go away, or a soggy, extra green strip of yard over the line.

A smell in a single room is its own puzzle, and it is not always a clog. We wrote up why one bathroom can smell like sewer when the rest of the house does not, which walks through dry traps, failed wax rings, and blocked vents.

Cabling versus hydro jetting

A drain cable, sometimes called a snake or auger, spins a cutting head through the blockage. We use it for a single hard clog: a toilet, a wad of hair, a foreign object, or a root mass that needs to be cut so water can move. It opens a path through the pipe. It does not clean the pipe walls.

Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water through the line and scours the full width of the pipe. It removes the grease, soap scum, sludge, and mineral scale that a cable leaves behind, which is why it is the better choice when the same line keeps clogging. It is also how we clear restaurant and kitchen lines for our commercial plumbing customers.

Jetting has one rule we do not skip: the pipe has to be sound enough to take it. A cracked, collapsed, or badly corroded section can be made worse by high pressure. So before we jet a line we have not seen, a plumber runs a camera inspection first. If the camera shows a healthy pipe with buildup, jetting is the fix. If it shows a broken pipe, we stop and talk about the fix instead of charging you to clean a line that is already failing.

Roots, cast iron, and old galvanized drains

Tree roots go after the moisture leaking from a pipe joint, then grow into the opening. Older clay and cast iron sewer lines have more joints and more places for roots to get in. Cutting or jetting the roots out clears the line, but roots grow back through the same gap, so a line with roots usually needs either scheduled maintenance cleaning or a fix at the joint where they enter. The camera shows which one makes sense.

Cast iron drains under older homes tend to fail from the inside. Scale builds up on the walls and narrows the pipe, and over time the bottom of the pipe can wear thin. Galvanized steel drains do something similar, rusting inward until a 2 inch line has a much smaller opening. If you have old galvanized drain lines that keep clogging no matter how often they are cleared, cleaning only buys time. We will tell you that plainly, show you on the camera, and price the replacement so you can plan for it.

Sewer line repair and replacement services

Most sewer line problems are local. A single cracked section, an offset joint, or a belly where the pipe has sagged and holds water can usually be fixed by replacing that section. The camera footage and a line locator tell us where the problem is and how deep, so we dig in one spot instead of trenching the yard.

Replacement makes sense when the problems are spread along the line: several bad joints, heavy corrosion in more than one place, or a pipe material that is failing everywhere at once. Central Texas clay soil swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries, and that movement works on buried pipe for years. A line that has shifted in several places is often cheaper to replace once than to patch three times. City sewer and septic service

Inside city limits, most homes drain to a municipal sewer main. The city generally takes care of the main in the street, and the line from your house to that connection is usually the property owner’s responsibility. That house-to-main line is where most of our sewer work happens.

Outside city limits, many homes drain to a septic system instead. We clear and fix the plumbing from the house to the tank, which is where a lot of slow drains and backups start. We do not pump, install, or repair septic tanks or drain fields. If the camera shows the line is clear and the problem is the septic system itself, we tell you so and send you to a septic professional. That split comes up often around Bastrop, where city and county homes sit side by side, and in Smithville and Elgin, where older drain lines and rural septic properties are both common.

What a drain service visit involves

We schedule visits Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. A licensed plumber arrives, wears shoe covers, asks what you have noticed, and finds a way into the line, usually through a cleanout. If there is no accessible cleanout, we may need to go in through a toilet or talk about adding one. We clear the drain, run the camera when the history calls for it, and show you what we see.

What affects the cost of drain and sewer work is mostly what we find: how accessible the line is, whether a cable is enough or the line needs jetting, how deep the pipe runs, and whether a repair is under a yard, a driveway, or a slab.
