Water line repair from the meter to your home

The water line most homeowners never think about is the one buried in the yard. It runs from the water meter, usually near the street, to the point where the pipe enters your home. In most cases the utility is responsible for everything up to the meter, and the property owner is responsible for the service line on the house side of it. When that pipe cracks, separates at a joint, or corrodes through, the repair falls to you, and that is the work Savior Service Plumbing Company handles.

Water line repair is different from a leak under a sink. The pipe is underground, you cannot see where it failed, and digging in the wrong spot wastes a day and tears up a yard for nothing. So the job is really two jobs: find the leak precisely, then fix it in a way that will not fail again next summer.

Signs of a leak in your water service line

A buried line can leak for weeks before it shows itself. These are the signs that usually bring the call:

• A water bill that jumps without any change in how much water your household uses.
• A wet or unusually green strip of grass along the path between the meter and the house, or a soft spot that never dries out in August.
• Lower water pressure at every fixture, not just one faucet.
• The sound of running water near the meter or the hose bibs when nothing in the house is on.

Any one of these is worth a check. Two or more together almost always mean water is leaving the line somewhere you cannot see.

Finding the leak before anyone digs

You can do the first test yourself. Shut off every fixture, the ice maker, and the irrigation, then watch the meter. When we arrive, we confirm that result and then narrow it down. Plenty of high water bills turn out to be an irrigation valve, a running toilet, or a slab leak under the house instead of the yard line, so we isolate each part of the plumbing system in order before we point to the service line. That keeps you from paying to dig up a yard that was never the problem. Once we know the leak is in the yard, we trace the route of the pipe and pinpoint the failure, so the hole we dig is small and in the right place.

Water line or sewer line

It also helps to know the difference. Your water line brings clean, pressurized water in. Your sewer line carries wastewater out, and sewer line issues show up as slow drains, gurgling, or sewage odor rather than a high water bill. How clay and sand soil damage buried pipe

Central Texas ground is hard on underground pipe, and the type of soil changes how a line fails. Expansive clay swells when it is wet and shrinks and cracks when it dries out. Every wet spring and hot, dry summer, that movement pushes and pulls on a buried pipe, stressing the joints and fittings until one lets go. Older rigid pipes take this especially poorly. High street pressure from a failed pressure-reducing valve adds stress of its own, and it wears out fixtures and the water heater inside the house too.

Sandy soil, common around Bastrop and in parts of the Lost Pines, causes a different kind of damage. Sand shifts and settles, so a line that was not bedded properly can sag between supports until a joint pulls apart. Sand also drains well, which means a leak can soak away underground for a long time before anything shows on the surface. Tree root growth is another factor in both soils. Root intrusion rarely breaks a sound pipe, but roots will find and widen a small leak, and a growing root can crack an older line where it passes close by.

Spot repair, reroute, or full replacement

Once the leak is found, there are three ways to fix it, and the right one depends on the pipe, not on what makes the biggest ticket.

Spot repair

If the line is in good shape and failed at one joint or one damaged section, we cut out the bad piece and splice in new pipe. This is the most common fix on newer lines.

Reroute

If the existing line runs under a driveway, patio, or addition, or through a tree root zone, it can make more sense to abandon that section and run a new line along a better path than to dig up concrete.

Full replacement

If the line is old galvanized steel, has leaked more than once, or is a material known for brittle failures, replacing the whole run is the better long-term repair. Many new service lines today are PEX or polyethylene, which flex with moving soil instead of cracking. Copper still has its place in some runs. What affects the cost of water line repair

We do not quote a buried line over the phone, because the cost depends on things only a site visit shows: how deep the line is, how long the run is, what the pipe is made of, whether it passes under concrete or landscaping, and whether the fix is a spot repair or a new line.
