Reliable Water Heater Services for Repair, Replacement, and Maintenance
Hot water is essential to everyday use. When your water heater isn’t working correctly, it can affect everything from showers to appliance performance. We offer complete services for both tank and tankless water heaters—whether you're dealing with poor recovery, inconsistent temperature, or a total failure.
Water heater repair or replacement
Most water heater calls start with the same question: can this one be fixed, or is it time for a new water heater? Savior Service Plumbing Company answers that after testing the unit, not before. Many water heater repair jobs are simple. A failed heating element, a worn thermostat, a bad gas control valve, a broken dip tube, or a dripping temperature and pressure relief valve can all be replaced, and the water heater goes back to work for years. Other problems are the end of the line, and we will tell you which one you have.
Here is how master plumber JD Salinas and our team weigh repair against replacement on a tank unit:
- Water leaking from the tank itself. Leaks from a fitting or valve are a repair. A leak from the tank body means the steel has rusted through, and no part fixes that.
- Age. A tank past ten years with a costly part failing is usually a better candidate for replacement than repair.
- Rusty hot water only. If the cold water runs clear and the hot water runs brown, the tank is often corroding inside.
- Repeat repairs. When the same heater needs a second or third part in a short stretch, the money is better spent on new equipment.
Tankless water heaters are different. Most of their parts can be serviced or replaced, so a tankless unit that throws error codes or runs lukewarm is often a cleaning or repair job, not a replacement.
Signs your water heater is failing
Water heaters rarely quit without warning. Here is what we listen for.
Noise and hot water running out
Popping or rumbling from a tank usually means sediment has built up on the bottom and water is boiling under it. Hot water that runs out faster than it used to points to sediment taking up space, a failed lower element on an electric unit, or a broken dip tube mixing cold water into the top of the tank.
A dripping relief valve
A relief valve that drips, or a discharge pipe with water in it, can mean the water pressure in the house is too high, or that thermal expansion has nowhere to go because there is no working expansion tank. That is common in newer homes. When the pressure-reducing valve on the main water supply wears out, street pressure pushes straight into the heater and shortens its life, so we check house pressure as part of diagnosing a heater. Our write-up on what a failed pressure valve does to a newer home explains why.
Tankless warning signs
On a tankless water heater, the early signs are temperature swings in the shower, hot water that cuts out when a second fixture opens, reduced water flow at hot taps, and error codes on the display. Early service prevents damage to the heat exchanger.
Tank or tankless water heaters
A tank heater stores hot water and keeps it ready. It costs less to install, handles several fixtures at once, and is simple to service. Tankless water heaters warm water only as it flows through, so they never run out, take up far less space, and can last well past a tank when they are maintained.
The trade-offs are real. A gas tankless water heater usually needs more gas than a tank and different venting, so switching from a tank is not always a straight swap. During our assessment we look at the existing venting path, electrical, water lines, and whether the current gas supply looks adequate, and we tell you what the conversion would involve before you commit. Electric tankless units need a large electrical supply many older homes lack. If a tank fits your household better, we will say so.
With tankless, long pipe runs mean a wait for hot water at the far bathroom. A recirculation setup fixes that, but only when it is done right. We wrote about when adding recirculation to a tankless pays off and when it causes more trouble than it solves.
Hard water, scale, and flushing
Central Texas water is hard, and plenty of homes outside city limits are on private wells with even more minerals. When hard water is heated, those minerals drop out as scale. In a tank, scale settles to the bottom as sediment, insulates the water from the burner or elements, and makes the heater use more energy to do the same work. On electric heaters it can bury the lower element until it burns out. The anode rod, which protects the tank from rusting, gets used up faster too.
Draining and flushing the tank and a check of the anode rod during routine water heater service slows all of that down. On a tankless water heater, scale coats the heat exchanger, so the unit needs a descaling flush through its service valves with a pump and cleaning solution. Most manuals suggest once a year, but that is written for average water. Our guide on how hard water changes a tankless flush schedule covers what we see here. A water softener reduces scale on both types, which is worth considering if you are replacing a heater anyway.
Sizing hot water heaters
A water heater that is too small runs out mid-shower. One that is too big wastes energy keeping water hot that nobody uses. Here is how we size each type:
- Tank heaters are sized by first-hour rating, which is how much hot water the heater can deliver in a busy hour, not just the gallons printed on the label.
- Tankless water heaters are sized by flow rate and temperature rise. We count the fixtures your household runs at the same time, then figure how many degrees the unit has to raise the incoming cold water. Groundwater is colder in winter, so we size for January, not July.
Where the heater sits matters as well. Many Central Texas homes have the water heater in an attic or garage, where a leak can damage ceilings and drywall before anyone notices. A proper water heater installation includes a drain pan where required, a relief valve discharge line that goes somewhere safe, correct venting for gas units, and an expansion tank when the system is closed.
What affects the cost of water heater repair
Cost depends on things we confirm on site: tank or tankless, electric, natural gas, or propane, where the unit sits and how hard it is to reach, whether venting or water pipes have to change, and whether code items like an expansion tank or drain pan need to be added. You get a free written estimate after we have seen the heater, so you know the scope and the number before any work starts.
We do a lot of water heater work outside Bastrop, too. In fast-growing Kyle, many homes were built within the last couple of decades, so original builder heaters are reaching the end of their service life, and our plumbing work in Kyle often means a water heater replacement. Buda is in a similar spot, and our Buda plumbing service covers repair and replacement on both tank and tankless units. Closer to home, our Smithville plumbing service sees many older tanks and homes on well water where scale is the main enemy, and we cover Lockhart homes as well.
When the problem is the plumbing, not the heater
Sometimes the heater is fine and the trouble is a leaking supply line, a failed valve, or low pressure from the street. Our general plumbing repairs and water line service pick up from there. Call Savior Service Plumbing Company at (512) 964-9618, Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, or request a quote online, and our local team will get your hot water back.
What to Expect During a Water Heater Service Appointment
Water heater issues require a focused approach to identify the cause and restore hot water without guesswork. Whether we’re servicing a tank or tankless model, our process is built around safety, code compliance, and restoring full function as quickly as possible.
Initial Inspection
We begin by evaluating the unit’s age, condition, and symptoms—such as no hot water, slow recovery, or odd noises. We test power, gas supply, thermostats, and check for visible wear or leaks.
Diagnostic Confirmation
After initial testing, we confirm the source of the failure. This may include internal corrosion, failed heating elements, scale buildup, or gas control issues—depending on the type of unit.
Service or Replacement
If repairable, we replace faulty components and restore performance. If replacement is needed, we install a new unit to code, including expansion tank support and pressure relief.
System Testing & Safety Check
After the service, we confirm full recovery, proper temperature control, and pressure. We check venting (if gas-powered) and test safety features before final cleanup.

We needed a new water heater and JD quickly came to my house and gave me a great quote on a new Rheem professional classic plus electric water heater (model PRO+E50 T2 RH95 EC1), in addition to the installation of a pressure regulating valve and expansion tank. Within a few days (mostly my delay) he and his team came to install it and do the other work. He was very courteous, communicated well, and thoughtful to take care of our house and property. Our old unit was facing an awkward position in the attic, so he changed the direction of the new unit so that it is much easier to maintain and service while also replacing and adding some plywood decking. He even showed me how to make a minor plumbing repair on one of our bathtubs. I will definitely call him and Savior Service Co. for plumbing work in the future.

I will definitely use Savior Service Company for all of my needs in the future! We thought we would be without water for the weekend or longer. But we called today (on a Friday afternoon) and they were busy but the owner himself showed up within a couple of hours and we had water again. Very respectful and professional. We need more companies like this! Honest and reliable quality work!

This is our second time to use Savior for plumbing problems that have emerged as our house has gotten older and plumbing problems start to pop up. They did a great job both times! I would recommend them to anyone with a plumbing problem in the Austin/Cedar Creek area. They helped us to understand what was going on with the plumbing in our house and worked to help prevent more problems from happening in the future. Most recently, they went the extra distance to fix the problem with our hot water heater, coming out after hours to get the job done. Well done!
Frequently Asked Questions
Straightforward answers to common questions about our Water Heater Services, process, and system requirements.
How long does a water heater usually last?
Most tank water heaters last around 8 to 12 years. Tankless units can last 15 years or more with proper maintenance. If your unit is near the end of its life and showing issues, replacement may be more cost-effective than repair.
Can I switch from a tank to a tankless water heater?
Yes. Converting to tankless is possible, but it often requires changes to gas supply, venting, and water line layout. We assess your setup and recommend what’s needed for a safe, efficient transition.
What are common signs a water heater is failing?
Fluctuating water temperature, low hot water pressure, unusual sounds, or rust-colored water may all indicate a failing unit. Visible leaks or standing water near the base are also signs it may need to be replaced.
Do you service both gas and electric water heaters?
Yes. We work on natural gas, propane, and electric water heaters, including traditional tank models and modern tankless systems. All work is performed according to current safety codes and manufacturer specifications.
